Kayak | Canoe | SUP Power Meter

  • What is the Kayak Power Meter?

The Kayak Power Meter is a 100% carbon-fiber, adjustable (+/-5cm) kayak shaft which has been instrumented with force and motion sensors in order to measure the power-output, force and stroke-rate of a kayaker.

The Kayak Power Meter uses multiple (12) load sensors, located at multiple positions (4) on the shaft, to measure force on multiple planes (2). The result is a 360 degree sensing range, allowing for accurate force measurement with any blade shape. The multiple force sensing locations allows for direct measurement of hand force, independent of the blade pressure distribution. No blade centre of pressure (COP) assumption is made.

This is the most accurate force measurement method for any paddling technique.

Monitor your power & stroke-rate in real time

Attach your blade(s) to the Kayak | Canoe | SUP Power Meter shaft and your Power, Power Balance (left stroke vs. right stroke power output) and Cadence (stroke-rate) will be displayed in real-time on an ANT+ display (e.g. Garmin Forerunner 310XT, 910XT, EDGE500; Suunto Ambit2 (S); Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 & S5) - each metric is updated once a second.

You can record these metrics on your ANT+ display alongside your GPS boat speed and heart rate. You can then use software such as Garmin Connect™, Cycling Analytics™ or TrainingPeaks™ to view your data and analyze your performance.

Power

Power is the value that represents the rate of energy output by a paddler - in other words, the intensity of the paddler, or how much work you are doing.

The higher the Power value, the more energy you are outputting each second.

Power Balance

Power Balance answers the question: 'How does the amount of power I generate on my left stroke compare with my right stroke?'

A Power Balance of 50%-50% represents an even technique, whilst 60%-40% shows a left stroke dominance.

Cadence

Cadence is another name for stroke-rate i.e. the number of strokes you take per minute.

The Kayak | Canoe | SUP Power Meter, can help you find your optimum Cadence - the Cadence at which you can maintain the highest average power output.

Record your power & force data at High Speed

Using the High Speed Data mode, the Kayak | Canoe | SUP Power Meter will allow you to record your Power, Top Hand Force & Bottom Hand Force at a choice of either 50, 60 or 70 times a second. Upload your High Speed Data to our Analysis App; select the section of data you want to analyze and the additional metrics shown above will be displayed.

  • What is power?

Power is the value that represents the rate of energy output by a paddler - in other words, the intensity of the paddler, or how much work you are doing.

Power is a measure of both force and velocity – to achieve a high power value, you need to generate a large amount of force with your strokes, and/or generate quick speed (velocity) by paddling faster.

The higher the power value, the more energy you are outputting each second.

  • Why train with power?

You only have to look at how power meters have changed the face of cycling to realise the benefits of training with power.

There are three areas that you need to balance during your training sessions - Duration (how long you train for), Frequency (how often you train) & Intensity (how hard you train).

Duration and frequency are easily managed; all you need is a device that will keep track of time. Intensity, on the other hand, can be a little trickier to measure. There are multiple systems available that will give you an indication of your intensity by indirect means; however, a power-meter is the only device that will give you a direct measurement of your intensity. Unlike heart rate monitors, which measure the body’s response to intensity, or GPS speed measuring devices, which are affected by environmental conditions, power meters give an absolute measure of intensity.

  • What are the benefits of training with power?

    Efficient training (intensity monitoring)
    - Assess your true rate of work in real-time (with no delay and free from the influence of environmental conditions)
    - Accurately monitor your level of fitness
    - Take the uncertainty out of your training sessions
    - Maintain quality throughout your session by keeping to the correct intensity
    - Reduce your chance of over training (or under training)
    - Tailor your training to your strengths and weaknesses

    Technique optimisation
    - Allows you to paddle better by identifying good technique

    Smarter racing
    - Allows for smart race planning and pace setting

  • Finding your optimum cadence

Which cadence allows you to apply the greatest average power output e.g. for a 4min effort?

Every athlete is different; you need only to watch a race to notice the variation in stroke-rates amongst paddlers, even at the elite level.

By knowing where your most effective cadence lies, you can train at that set cadence with the goal of increasing your power output. This will help you to develop a more effective and powerful stroke, improving your performance.

Our fantastic product line-up
